Dr. Robert D. Garrett serves as an Assistant Professor of Geography at the American University of Phnom Penh, where he brings a rich blend of global experience and academic expertise. Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dr. Garrett completed a Bachelor’s degree in History, a Master’s in International Studies, and a Doctorate in Geography, all from Oklahoma State University.
Prior to joining AUPP, Dr. Garrett spent approximately nine years as a lecturer of History and Geography at Stamford International University in Bangkok, Thailand. His diverse career also includes service in the United States Army and the Oklahoma National Guard, teaching English as a second language in Korea and Thailand, and working as a Business Development Manager in China, for Unarco, the world’s leading shopping cart manufacturer.
Dr. Garrett’s professional journey is complemented by extensive travels, having worked and explored over 40 countries, including Egypt, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Korea, China, and Thailand. These experiences have not only broadened his worldview but also enriched his teaching methodology.
In his personal life, Dr. Garrett is passionate about surfing, enjoying the waves in places like Bali, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the East Coast of the United States. He is also a fitness enthusiast, actively participating in swimming and exercising. Additionally, Dr. Garrett challenges his intellect by studying stoic philosophy and playing strategic board games. His culinary adventures as a “foodie” further reflect his enthusiasm for diverse cultures.
