1. Could you tell us about yourself?
My name is Chun Phallamonunhh, and I am currently pursuing a double major in Information Technology Management at the American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP) and Computer Science at Fort Hays State University (FHSU).
Leadership and innovation have been at the core of my university experience. I served as president of both the IT club and the Craft and Charity club (Club YeyYey), where I have had the opportunity to lead initiatives that combine technical innovation with community impact. I lead a few projects additionally, I play a key role in the creation of AUPP’s makerspace, fostering a space for creative learning and collaboration among students.
My passion for technology has driven me to compete in numerous tech competitions, including Capture The Flag (CTF) challenges, hackathons, and startup contests, where I have collectively earned approximately $10,000 in prize money. In recognition of my contributions to the tech community, I was honored with the Women in Tech Award in 2023.
Beyond academics, I am passionate about giving back to the community. I joined the Puthi Campaign, an initiative aimed at raising cybersecurity awareness among underprivileged youth in Cambodia. Through Club YeyYey, I have also organized annual shelter visitations, continuing even after my tenure as president.
Professionally, I have gained valuable experience through internships at LGMS, a cybersecurity firm in Malaysia, where I worked as a pentester, and at the Ministry of Interior’s Digital Innovation Development Department. In addition to these roles, I have taken on freelance projects that have further honed my skills.
When I’m not immersed in tech, you can find me dabbling in art, writing, or simping over fictional and non-fictional book characters. Sometimes, I go to the gym to lift things up and put them down or do sport. But my true zen moments come when I’m lying in my dark cold room, staring at the wall illuminated by my RGB lights. It’s my personal way of balancing productivity with wonderful introspection.
2. Could you tell us about the achievements you are most proud of?
The achievements I am most proud of reflect my dedication to technology, leadership, and professional growth. One of my most fulfilling roles has been serving as president of both the IT club and the Craft and Charity club (Club YeyYey). Through these leadership positions, I was able to spearhead various initiatives, I had the opportunity to not only lead but also inspire others to collaborate on innovative projects as well as social community work. A particularly proud moment is leading the creation of AUPP’s iot lab, a space designed to foster creativity and hands-on learning for students from diverse backgrounds. I hope this space will become a hub for collaboration, where students experiment, build, and learn together.
In the realm of technology, competing in various Capture The Flag (CTF) challenges, hackathons, and startup contests has been incredibly rewarding. These experiences have allowed me to develop and refine my technical skills, ultimately earning me a total of around $10,000 in prize money. A significant moment in my journey was being awarded the prestigious Women in Tech Award in 2023, a recognition that validated my passion for innovation and my contributions to the tech community.
One of my proudest accomplishments was being selected for a fully sponsored trip to Paris, France, where I attended the Viva Tech Conference 2024. This global event gave me the opportunity to connect with industry leaders and explore cutting-edge innovations in technology. In addition to that, I also won a trip to Singapore, where I visited major universities as well as companies like Google and Amazon. These experiences have expanded my horizons and given me invaluable insights into the global tech landscape.
Professionally, my internships at LGMS as a pentester and at the Ministry of Interior’s Digital Innovation Development Department have been instrumental in shaping my cybersecurity expertise. These experiences, combined with my academic and extracurricular achievements, are milestones that I carry forward as I continue my journey in the world of technology and innovation.
3. Could you tell us about one thing or experience you encountered that changed your life?
An experience that significantly changed my life began in middle school, a time when I found myself surrounded by the wrong kind of friends. This group led me down a negative path, and it wasn’t long before I was caught in a web of weird rumors and ostracized by my peers. I felt isolated, and it was a tough period where trust seemed nonexistent, and I struggled with my own identity. It wasn’t just the rumors or the social exclusion that hurt the most—it was the feeling of being stuck, not knowing how to break free or improve the situation.
However, everything started to change when I entered high school. I met new friends who were positive influences and encouraged me to embrace who I truly was. These friendships helped me regain my confidence and sense of self. They showed me what it means to have supportive, genuine people in your life, and this shift in my social environment significantly impacted how I viewed myself and others. It wasn’t just about escaping a bad situation; it was about growing and learning from it.
Then COVID hit, and the long stretches of isolation gave me time to deeply reflect on life. I began contemplating topics like existence, psychology, politics, and both Eastern and Western philosophies. This period of introspection pushed me to focus on developing skills beyond schoolwork. I started engaging in new hobbies and learning more about cybersecurity, which sparked a newfound passion. That experience shaped my personal and professional growth, giving me a stronger sense of direction in life.
4. Who is the person you look up to the most?
The person I look up to the most is my mom. She’s the strongest and most virtuous woman I know, embodying resilience and bravery. Throughout my life, she has been a constant source of inspiration, facing challenges head-on with unwavering strength. Her fierce spirit and commitment to her values not only make me feel safe but also deeply influences who I am. I admire how she tackles situations with courage and determination, and that’s a quality I strive to embody in my own life. Beyond my mom, I also learn from everyone around me. I believe that every person has something valuable to teach, whether it’s through their actions, their mindset, or their experiences. By observing those close to me, I gain insights into different ways of thinking and living, which helps me grow.
Interestingly, one of the people I admire most is Jreg. He’s the coolest and most eccentric person I’ve come across, and I really resonate with him. He embodies an even more eccentric version of me—like who I would be if I didn’t have to care about societal perceptions. His absurd yet insightful take on politics, society, and life fascinates me, and I appreciate how he tackles complex topics with humor and creativity. His willingness to embrace his quirks and challenge conventions is something I deeply respect.
I also find inspiration in fictional characters like Wei Wuxian and Gu Mang, among many others. These characters resonate with me because of their complexity, their struggles, and the unique way they navigate their worlds. Wei Wuxian, from Mo Dao Zu Shi, is a bold and intricate character. He begins as a bright, carefree youth with a sense of justice and a knack for mischief. His strength lies in his willingness to challenge the status quo, opting for his own path instead of conforming to societal expectations. Although his journey into cultivating demonic arts is well-intentioned, it leads to his downfall and alienation. Despite the pain and persecution he faces, he remains compassionate and loyal to those he loves. His character represents defiance in the face of adversity, and his resilience in rebuilding his life after tragedy makes him particularly compelling. Wei Wuxian’s story explores themes of morality, loyalty, and the complexity of doing what is right in a flawed world.
Gu Mang, from Yu Wu, is another captivating figure with a turbulent past. He is a deeply multifaceted character, shaped by both his lowly origins and the hardships of his life, but also by an innate, enduring kindness and resilience. Despite being born into slavery and constantly looked down upon, he does not let bitterness or anger define him. Instead, he remains compassionate, empathetic, and self-sacrificing, enduring harsh treatment with a smile. This kindness, however, is often misunderstood or dismissed due to his status, leading him to internalize much of his pain. He later became a highly respected general through sheer ability. One of the core aspects of Gu Mang’s character is his ability to remain upbeat and humorous in the face of adversity. He carries the emotional burdens of those around him without complaint, showing an almost childlike naivety that contrasts sharply with the bloodshed and brutality of war. His sense of humor and carefree demeanor endeared him to his comrades, making him beloved despite the grimness of the battlefield. His soldiers, who fought under the banner of the absurdly named “Wangba Army,” followed him not because of his title, but out of loyalty to the man who treated them as equals, celebrated with them, and even pawned his own armor to make
sure they could feast. Even after he was labeled a traitor due to being captured and allegedly switching sides. His allure lies in the contrast between his carefree, humorous exterior and the deep inner turmoil he conceals. His story delves into the burdens of betrayal, redemption, and loyalty. He is driven by complicated emotions, including loyalty to his friends, his nation, and his former self. His desire for personal freedom often conflicts with societal expectations, leading to constant inner strife.
Both Wei Wuxian and Gu Mang challenge societal norms and endure the consequences of their choices. Yet, their inner strength and authenticity make them admirable and unforgettable. They fight for the common people and what they believe is right, not seeking fame, outer validation or recognition for their actions. Their nonchalant approach to doing good sets them apart as heroes who prioritize integrity over ego.
5. What are the steps you took that led you to where you are right now?
My journey toward my current pursuits has been an evolving tapestry of interests and influences. Initially, I dreamed of becoming a surgeon, inspired by the heroic portrayals of medical professionals in movies and K-dramas. This aspiration ignited a curiosity about the human body and the art of healing. As I delved deeper into this path, I found myself drawn to psychology, eager to understand the complexities of the human mind and behavior, which seemed crucial for a successful career in medicine. Though, I still want to be a trauma surgeon due to the intensity and extremity as well as being hands on approach.
This fascination naturally transitioned into an interest in politics. I began exploring various political ideologies and their profound impact on society, fueling my desire to understand the structures that govern our lives. This exploration led me to philosophy and a brief phase of studying theology, where I sought to grasp the deeper meanings behind human actions and the diverse perspectives of various cultures and backgrounds.
However, when my parents expressed their preference for me not to pursue a medical career, I found myself at a crossroads. This pivotal moment forced me to reevaluate my options. Ultimately, I chose Information Technology as my second option, influenced by my growing curiosity about cybersecurity—a field I had started to explore during my political phase. This journey has not only shaped my academic and career interests but has also instilled in me a passion for understanding the intersection of technology and human behavior, guiding my current pursuits in the tech field.
6. What are the happiest moments of your life?
From 9th grade onwards, some of the happiest moments of my life have revolved around the friendships I forged and the memories we created together. High school was a whirlwind of laughter and mischievous chaos. I met a group of friends who transformed my experience, filling each day with joy and adventure. We caused playful disruptions in class, shared countless meals in the canteen, and made unforgettable memories everywhere we went. Those carefree days
shaped who I am today, teaching me the value of camaraderie and the beauty of living in the moment.
Then came the COVID era, a time that challenged us all but also led me to explore deeply personal and intellectual topics. With more time at home, I delved into psychology, philosophy, and politics, searching for answers to life’s big questions. This exploration was complemented by my love for the fictional world, which provided an escape and expanded my understanding of different perspectives. It was during this period of reflection that I discovered my passion for cybersecurity, igniting a desire to make a difference in the digital world.
Transitioning to university brought newfound freedom and excitement. I embraced opportunities to lead and innovate, which culminated in participating in various competitions. Winning competitions was a significant milestone that fueled my entrepreneurial spirit. Each success reinforced my belief in my capabilities and motivated me to pursue my passions relentlessly.
These moments—from mischievous high school antics to profound explorations during COVID, and the exhilarating experiences of university—have woven together to create a tapestry of happiness and growth in my life.
7. Is there any advice to the people that look up to you?
To those who look up to me, first of all, don’t. I don’t want to fit in their box of expectation, nor do I want to spend my life living up to anyone’s projection or being put on a pedestal. But I would say embrace your true self and don’t be afraid to break the mold. Always stay true to yourself. It’s ok to be a little defiant against societal norms and expectations, it encourages us to question the status quo. Don’t be afraid to stand up for your beliefs and values, even if it means walking a lonely path. The world needs individuals who are willing to speak out and make their voices heard.
Also, cultivate deep, meaningful relationships, and make genuine connections. Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you, those who will stand by you in times of struggle and celebrate your victories with you. Build a community that shares your values and encourages you to grow. These connections will provide support and comfort during difficult times, helping you navigate your journey with resilience.
Additionally, embrace your uniqueness. It’s okay to be different. Your quirks and eccentricities are not liabilities; they are your greatest assets. Use them to forge your own path and to express yourself authentically. The world thrives on diversity, and by being true to yourself, you contribute to that richness.
Moreover, always remain open to learning and evolving. Have a profound adaptability throughout their journeys. They navigate complex situations with a willingness to learn from their experiences and the people around them. Embrace every opportunity to acquire knowledge and gain different perspectives. Life is a constant learning process, and staying curious will help you grow not only as a person but also in your understanding of the world.
Lastly, don’t shy away from adversity. It’s cool to face significant challenges and obstacles and emerge stronger because of them. View difficulties as opportunities for growth and learning. Embrace your struggles and remember that each setback is a steppingstone toward your ultimate goal.
