Dr. Janet Steele to Present the Essential Topics of Politics and the Media, and How They Intertwine

Dr. Janet Steele, author of “Wars Within: The Story of Tempo, an Independent Magazine in Soehartos Indonesia” and Associate Professor of Journalism at the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University, will visit AUPP and discuss culture, politics, media, and the relationship between them.

Her book focuses on Tempo magazine and its relationship to the politics and culture of New Order Indonesia.  She was awarded two Fulbright teaching and research grants, and has served as a State Department speaker-specialist in Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, the Philippines, East Timor, Taiwan, Burma, Sudan, Egypt, India, and Bangladesh.

She is the author of numerous articles on journalism theory and practice. Her most recent book, Email Dari Amerika [Email from America], is a collection of newspaper columns written in Indonesian and originally published in the newspaper Surya.
