English Preparation Instructor

Position Summary

The English Preparation Instructor is a member of the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) team at the American University of Phnom Penh, responsible for delivering high-quality English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instruction to students preparing for entry into AUPP’s undergraduate or graduate degree programs. Teaching assignments and campus location, either the AUPP Main Campus (EPP) or Foxcroft Campus (GEPP) are determined by institutional need. Reporting to the Head of English Preparation Programs, this role focuses on developing the academic English skills, critical thinking competencies, and study readiness required for success in English-medium degree programs.

Essential Functions

Teaching and Instruction

Deliver communicative, student-centered English for Academic Purposes instruction aligned with program level descriptors and student entry requirements.
Develop students’ academic writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills in preparation for undergraduate or graduate study.
Scaffold instruction effectively for mixed-ability classes and diverse adult and young adult learners.
Integrate academic integrity, critical thinking, and research skills into course delivery.

Curriculum and Assessment

Design and administer assessments aligned with program standards, providing detailed and timely formative and summative feedback.
Maintain accurate student records and use performance data to inform instructional decisions and report on student progress.
Contribute to curriculum review and materials development in collaboration with the Head of English Preparation Programs.

Student Support

Support students in their academic and linguistic transition toward degree-level study, fostering an inclusive and rigorous learning environment.
Identify students requiring additional support and refer them to the Head of English Preparation Programs or Learning Support Coordinator as appropriate.
Participate in placement assessment processes as required.

Professional Responsibilities

Attend regular faculty meetings and contribute actively to program coordination and shared planning.
Engage in professional development activities supported by the TLC, including university-wide training initiatives.
Contribute to the collegial culture of the TLC and the broader AUPP academic community.

Essential Qualifications

A master’s degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, EAP, English language teaching, or a closely related field.
A minimum of three years of experience teaching academic English to adult or young adult learners.
Strong knowledge of academic writing, reading, and citation conventions at undergraduate or graduate level.
Native-level English language proficiency (CEFR C2).

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Demonstrated ability to deliver engaging, communicative, and student-centered English language instruction.
Working knowledge of EAP methodology, including task-based learning and academic skills development.
Strong assessment literacy, including the ability to design valid assessments and provide constructive feedback.
Organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate records and meet reporting deadlines.
Collaborative team member with strong interpersonal skills and experience working with diverse, multicultural student populations.

Desired Qualifications & Experience

Familiarity with standardized English proficiency assessments including IELTS, TOEFL, or Accuplacer.
Experience teaching EAP in Southeast Asia or a comparable context.
Experience working with both undergraduate and graduate level learners.
Familiarity with educational technologies and AI tools in an English language teaching context.
